Bochum is the sixth largest city of North Rhine-Westphalia, but it’s not quite as well known as, say, Cologne. Its population sits at around 360,000 people, making it the 16th most populous city in Germany. The Ruhr Heights (Ruhrhöhen) hill chain divides this German town between two rivers; Ruhr to the south and Emscher to the north.
The city started out as a small village back in the 19th century when coal mining and steel were its main industries. Nowadays, the city is a cultural centre of the Ruhr region and home to a municipal theatre called the Schauspielhaus Bochum, and over 20 smaller theatre productions of all kinds – musicals included!
